Know Your Gold

Gold jewelry never goes out of style. It is wearer-friendly, meaning it does not cause allergies like other metals. People may have problems with the metals mixed with it, but hardly the gold itself. It is beautiful to look at and it can be made into any shape or design.

The purity of gold Jewelery (In Danish  guld smykker) is marked with a ‘K’, which stands for karat. Jewelry will be marked 24K, 18K, etc. depending on the purity. The higher the karat number, the higher the percentage of gold in the jewelry. 24K is pre gold. 18K is 75 per cent gold and it contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of other metals. 14K is about 58 per cent gold and contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals. 12K gold is 50 per cent gold. It contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of other metals. 10K gold is 41.7 per cent gold. It consists of 10 parts gold and 14 parts of other metals.
Almost all gold jewelry is available in three different forms. They are pure gold, gold plated and gold filled. If you are planning to buy jewelry made of gold, it is very important to understand the different factors that affect the quality and worth of gold.

Solid gold is durable. It is a better choice for everyday jewelry. It is found in three different colours. They are yellow, white and rose pink gold. Yellow gold is the most common of the three. White gold is more expensive than the yellow one as it is not easily available. It is used mostly for studded jewelry (In Danish smykker). Eve though it is unique and exclusive, it has one advantage which is that it is coated with rhodium and needs to be recoated at least once a year. The third one is rose gold which the rarest of the three. Due to this, it is extremely expensive.

Gold-filled or gold-plated jewelry is suitable for jewelry that is only worn on rare occasions. If they are worn everyday, the gold layer will eventually be diminished and expose the metal underneath. This can stain the skin and even cause allergies. The gold layer in gold-plated jewelry is thinner than the one in gold-filled jewelry. This makes it wear away more easily.

It is important to remember that it is best to buy the highest quality gold to ensure that the jewelry pieces last a lifetime.
